Keeping Warm in North Alabama this Winter

As we are working into the new year, we are looking at some cold weather. Here in North Alabama snow is coming week. SERVPRO has some tips to try and keep your home warm through these winter months.
- Check Fan Setting
Most fans in your home have a "winter" setting. In the summer your fan spins counter-clockwise, this is because you want to pull the heat up. If you flip the switch on your fan it will make the fan spin clockwise. As most know, heat rises and the clockwise spin pushes the heat back down into the room.
- Opening and Closing Curtains
During the day open your curtains to allow the sun to help heat up your home and close them at night to trap in the heat. Doing this will allow us to take in the benefits of vitamin D and cutting down on the power bill.
- Sealing Off Leaks
Check obvious places where warm air is leaving your home like windows and doors. Also, you want to check around the house and pay attention to where wood meets concert. Caulking can make a huge difference.
- Install a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat allows you to manage the temperature with the time of the day. You can make it nice and toasty for when you wake up and let it be cooler when you are work. Also, you might consider bringing the temp down when you are asleep. This has been proven to help you sleep better.
- Add Layers to Wood Floors
Heat can escape through the floors. Adding rugs and carpet can not only add to the decor of your home but help the room stay warmer then it would with out it. It is a simple way to make a difference in your commonly used rooms.
Overall, one must look out for themselves this winter. Breaking out the warm socks and heavy blankets is always a good idea! We wish the best for everyone during these cold times and do not forget to stay warm!
